(TIP: When children are entering competitions, I usually get them to give my comping email address and telephone number rather than their own. That's great, I hear you say. Well, it would be if they were really wins but in reality, I don't consider them to be. I know this might sound a bit strange but both "wins" are prime examples of clever marketing. Both "wins" were in fact, personal vouchers for money off specific products. Although the potential saving off the list price might appear significant, as I currently have no intention of buying the items in question, the "win" is of no value whatsoever. Had I been tempted to use the vouchers, the company would have gained two reasonably significant sales. The moral of the story - don't be blinded by the hype. It's a new day, a new year and that means a new comping log (TIP: I always keep a record of my competition entries. That way, I can usually match any prize with a particular competition - or at least narrow it down to a couple of options. It also helps me to detect any potential scams because after all, I can't have won something if I never entered the competition in the first place! Another benefit of keeping a log is that it helps to remind me of potential comping sites that I might otherwise have forgotten about).<br /><br />The beginning of the month is often a good time for comping as many websites launch new competitions at the start of a month. Today, it's a bit on the quiet side but it is a bank holiday and I'm sure there will be a few sore heads out there from seeing in 2009. My entries today are all "old faithfuls".
